Here’s hoping the Red Sox do not sign Mark Texeira. The length and width of the contract can only breed resentment among the other players on the team, who currently have reasonable salaries and responsibilities (by MLB standards). This goes for salaried management too, for instance, it can’t be a healthy dynamic when Theo the GM makes $500K, and Manny Ramirez makes $20 million. Yes, players care about winning, but they also care about being treated fairly, and baseball is their job. They naturally want equal compensation. In so many ways large contracts can tear apart an otherwise balanced winning system from the top down.
